LECTURES

Lecture 7: Visual Analysis

Visual Literacy:  (according to the American Library Association website)
  • A set of abilities that enables an individual to effectively find, interpret, evaluate, use and create images and visual media.
  • An interdisciplinary concept and plays an important role across higher education in the arts, humanities, science, technology, business and more.
Visual Analysis:
  • A method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
  • In its strictest definition -a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
  • The purpose of visual analysis can also recognise the choices that a designer made in creating the design, as well as to better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content, or meaning.
  • Is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
  • As citizens of the 21st century, we are constantly confronted with visual media. Practisingvisual analysis sharpens critical judgment skills and helps people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information.
Three phases of visual analysis:

  • Phase 1 - Observation
    • This means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
    • It is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
  • Phase 2 - Analysis
    • Requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
    • Think about how the specific visual elements that you’ve identified combine together to create a whole, and what effect that whole has on the viewer.
  • Phase 3 - Interpretation
    • In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.

1. Explain, in about 50 words, why you chose that design and how it is related to that UNSDG goal.

According to United Nations, SDG 3 is ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. I would like to work on SDG Goal 3 is because health is a fundamental human right and key indicator of sustainable development. Poor health threatens the rights of children to education, limits economic opportunities for men and women and increase poverty within commounities and countries around the world. In addition to being a cause of poverty, health is impacted by poverty and strongly connected to other aspectes of sustainable development, including water and sanitation, gender equality, climate change and peace and stability.

2. Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the selected design

Phase 1: Observation

This design work is in portrait format. The primary colours shown in the visual components are blue, purple and green. Blue colour is reflected in the doctor and green colour is used as the colour in the virus that around the doctors. There are two layer in total in the design, which are the background that contains virus and the doctor, nurses portrait. There are curved lines were used as the arkwork's main structural elements which are the patterns reflected on the virus in the background and the shape of the earth. At the center is an image of the human characters in difference position. Besides, there is the chain that is being help up by the doctor. The main character who is the doctor is holding the globe with the chain that surrounding the globe and act his feet are the small little spike circles.

Phase 2: Analysis

This design is symmetrically balanced. The emphasis is on the central image followed by other human figure surrounding it. such as doctor, nurses and soldiers. They human lagguge show movement. The repetition of the circular shapes and sepaip at the foreground and background. The difference level colour which are purple and white makes the subject stand out more and plays an important role in balancing off the empty space which complements the overall design. The overall composition is harmony and unity, there are colour in blue, green and purple, and the comfortable for the viewers. There is proportion in the layout, creating hierarchy. First, we see the portrait of the main character in the middle then followed by the smaller character or people around him and finally the many circle and sepaip.

Phase 3: Interpretation

I observed that this design emphasizes the healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. In this design, poor health in the world was implied between the people and virus. Observing how the medical staff and security officer who are working hard and saving the people who get the disease or getting unwell. This artwork is telling us medical staff are working hard with us to fight all the disease and giving people a healthy and peaceful life. Safety and health at work is can save lives. Besides, the artwork try to tell that the medical staffs are showing up every day in incredible times, both onsite and offsite, for performing they work with excellence for those people serve, and for supporting not only patients but for each other. We need to operate as amazing team and be here for our community.

Part 2: Design

Based on the visual analysis of the selected artwork, I intended to create a design in response to it. My design will continue to focus on medical staff who are working hard with us while also incorporating the theme of Good Health and Well Being.

Through visual research, I have decided my design direction. I hope I can convey the meaning of my design through CARING, LOVE, and SUPPORTING people in the world. I will use various soothing colors and peaceful illustrations in my artwork to bring out the meaning of caring, love, and supporting people. Therefore, when these condition are met, healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages are ensured.

Sketeches

I design two sketches, which each brought out a different meaning I wanted to express In the first sketch,   I wanted to depict a child who is having a good health and well being, and a peaceful world.

The main idea which is I convey the meaning of my design through the caring and love hand from the medical staff to support the patient. (Sketch 1)Therefore, I draw a healthy child is looking at the medical staff with a grateful heart. (Sketch 2) The beautiful scenery in various soothing colors that can bring out the meaning of PEACE and WARM HEART.

I want to mix these two sketch together to make the design containing more meaning.

FEECBACK
Dr. Jinchi said this idea is fun what I think. But I can try to bring out the meaning of the hand (CARING , LOVE and SUPPORTING people) so everyone can see it more clearly. Beside that, Ms Yip suggested me that can try to draw more different pattern of hands.

After getting the feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I try to draw the different pattern of hands to show more caring. Besides, I do not think that my sketch 1 and sketch 2 design are good enough so I decided to draw another design and looking for some new design ideas from Pinterest.

I designed one sketch, which brought out the meaning of CARING and LOVE. The medical staff work with excellence for those people serve.
Sketch 4

The draft after colouring. It is mainly in soft colours, which fits my initial idea of creating an illustration that shows its meaning in a soothing and calm way.
Sketch 5

After getting feedback from Dr. Jinchi, I decided to continue to add more details and work on it.  I added more flowers on the heart to look no empty. Also, I try to change the red colour of heart to the colour of earth which is green and blue.

Sketch 6

Sketch 7

I decided to choose the earth colour heart of drawing as my final outcome. Because red heart looks monotonous. The blue and green colour are closer to nature. Nature heart=healthy life and well-being.

FINAL OUTCOME

This is my final artwork which connecting with UNSDG Goals, Good Health and Well-Being.  This artwork bring out the meaning of toensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all and all ages. First, there is a nurse hugs a heart of people who show a acts of protection, help and love. The heart represents a healthy and feel joy people. Also, the heart with earth colour which is green as land, blue as sea. Due to the reason that, the earth represent nature, nature bring out the meaning of peaceful heart. Also, the flowers that mean LOVE and AFFECTION. In the final, what I want to take out from this work is that from non-communicable diseases through prevention, caring, showing love and promote mental health and well-being.

The nurse and heart in the middle of the artwork represent emphasis. Repetition is used in the many flowers and plants. Also, the soothing and calm way colour in the artwork represent harmony and unity.

Feedback
After the first review session, Dr.Jinchi asked me to add the referents and the ideas taken from. This is because to avoid plagiarize. Also, she suggested me to draw more different pattern of hands to bring out the meaning of hands (CARING, LOVE and SUPPORT). During the second review session, I draw another new drawing because I don't like the first drawing. She suggested me to add more flowers on heart and change the colour of red heart to earth heart. Also, Dr Jinchi praised me that the overall is good.

Reflection
Through this final project, I not only gained technical improvement, but also a different perspective on how to interpret artworks. Observing, analysing, interpreting, and taking inspiration from an artwork was a new learning experience for me. Also, in order to better communicate what I try to convey in my design, I delved deeper and learned more about the topic, realising how valuable it was to be able to give a voice to a specific group of people through my work. This is the design that I put the most effort into throughout this module, so I was very pleased and satisfied when I completed it. Although this is not the best work, I hope it can be a starting point for my design journey.
